BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION

USPS provides a competitive compensation and benefits package for Postal Service career employees. Benefits and eligibility may vary based on position, employment status, and program requirements.

Compensation

In addition to competitive base pay and scheduled pay increases (based on job type), eligible employees may receive:

  • Overtime pay
  • Night shift differential
  • Sunday premium pay

Health Insurance (FEHB)

USPS participates in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program, which offers comprehensive coverage and plan flexibility. A significant portion of the cost is typically paid by USPS. Plan options may include:

  • Fee-for-Service plans
  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
  • High Deductible and Consumer-Driven Health Plans

Employee premium contributions are generally made on a pre-tax basis, which may reduce overall costs.

Related: Employees can sign in to LiteBlue USPS to access benefits information and related self-service tools, as available.

Dental and Vision Insurance (FEDVIP)

Eligible employees may enroll in the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). Employees pay the full premium. Premium contributions are generally made on a pre-tax basis, which may help lower out-of-pocket cost.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

Career employees may be eligible to participate in the Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) Program after one year of service. FSAs allow tax-free contributions that may be used for qualified:

  • Health care expenses
  • Dependent care expenses (including daycare)

Long-Term Care Insurance (FLTCIP)

Employees may enroll in the Federal Long-Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP), which provides coverage for long-term care services such as nursing home care or assisted living. These costs are typically not covered by standard health insurance or Medicare.

Retirement

USPS participates in the federal retirement program, which includes a defined benefit (pension) and disability coverage. Eligibility is determined by age and years of creditable service.

Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)

Career employees may contribute to the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), a retirement savings plan comparable to a private-sector 401(k). Contributions are generally tax-deferred, and USPS may provide automatic and matching contributions up to 5% of basic pay, subject to program rules.

Social Security and Medicare

Newly hired postal employees are covered under Social Security and Medicare.

Life Insurance (FEGLI)

USPS offers life insurance through the Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Program. Basic coverage is fully paid by USPS, and employees may elect additional coverage through payroll deductions.

Commuter Program

The Commuter Program allows tax-free purchase of eligible public transportation and parking expenses, up to applicable IRS maximums, to help reduce commuting costs.

Leave

USPS provides annual (vacation) and sick leave for eligible employees.

Annual leave:

  • 13 days per year for the first 3 years
  • 20 days per year after 3 years of service
  • 26 days per year after 15 years of service

Sick leave:

  • Full-time employees earn 4 hours per pay period
  • Part-time employees earn leave on a prorated basis based on paid hours

Holidays

USPS observes 11 paid holidays each year.

Career Development and Training

USPS supports employee development through training initiatives that strengthen operational knowledge and build leadership skills. Executive-level development may be available through a multi-level program for employees who meet established performance criteria.
